How Traumatic Brain Injury Affects the Behavioral Health Process
Friday, November 20, 2020
9:00AM - 4:00PM PST
with Dan Overton, LMHC, Certified Brain Injury Specialist
Location: Online
Continuing Education: 5.5
Cost: Free
Who Should Attend: This training is open to all RVP Volunteer Providers, social workers, mental health counselors, and community providers.
What You Will Learn:
A brain injury can complicate the behavioral health (BH) process, is often invisible, misunderstood and yet it is prevalent in our military/veteran population. It can be very difficult for a BH provider to properly assess and establish how and/or how much a brain injury is contributing to and/or exacerbating symptoms. Brain injuries hardly exist in a vacuum and are often found associated with and linked to BH issues such as PTSD, SUD and more.
While the BH provider cannot be expected to be an expert it can increase the success of the client to know more about what brain injury is, how to identify it, when/why/how and where to refer and how to incorporate brain injury into treatment plans. This presentation will examine the tools used in evaluation, comorbidity and how to build effective treatment plans in an interactive and engaging way.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the primary evaluation techniques related to brain injury.
- Describe how the behavioral health provider can incorporate brain injury goals/objectives into more traditional treatment plans.
- Understand when/why/how and where to refer a brain injury client.
- Distinguish between the physical manifestations of the brain injury and mental health.
- Identify at least 3 positive outcomes specific to the brain injured BH client.
