In this session, we discuss how adults can support children and teens who are grieving. We address how to talk to children and teens about death, developmental considerations, and unique aspects related to suicide, homicide, and other modes of death.

Location: Online

Continuing Education: 1.5 (Applied through NASW Oregon)

Cost: Free to RVP Volunteers, Vet Center and VA Staff
$29 for Other Community Providers

Who Should Attend: This training is open to all RVP Volunteer Providers, social workers, mental health counselors, and community providers.

What You Will Learn:

What do children and teens who are grieving need from the adults in their lives? In this 90-minute presentation we explore the prevalence of grief in childhood, what grief looks like, developmental considerations, common fears and concerns children and teens have after a death, and what children and teens need in their grief. We also provide information about Dougy Center’s local programming, ensuring training participants can make informed referrals and access our resources.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

  1. Make accurate referrals to local resources and programming for children, teens, and young adults in the Portland/SW Washington area who are grieving the death of a parent, primary caregiver, or sibling
  2. State the prevalence of childhood bereavement
  3. Identify the factors that influence grief
  4. Compare developmental considerations for grief in children & teens
  5. Explain the fears, concerns, and needs of children and teens who are grieving

CE Faculty
Jana DeCristofaro, LCSW, is the Community Response Program Coordinator at Dougy Center. Since 2002, Jana has coordinated peer support groups for children, teens, young adults, and adults. She also provides consultation and training for grieving families, students, community members, and professionals locally and nationally.

Jana is the host and producer of Grief Out Loud, Dougy Center’s podcast, which features interviews with other professionals in the grief world and those with lived experience of grief. She has also facilitated community responses for schools and community organizations after a death.
