Who Should Attend: This training is open to all RVP Volunteer Providers, social workers, mental health counselors, and community providers.

What You Will Learn:

We will discuss the background and theories of suicide prevention in the United States, Oregon and with Veterans. How to identify a Veteran that may be at risk for suicide and how to help them including how to discuss reducing access to lethal means. We will also discuss local resources.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

  1. Learn basic information and theories regarding suicide prevention.
  2. Have a general understanding of Suicide regarding Veterans within the US and Oregon.
  3. Learn how to identify when a Veteran is at risk of suicidal ideation or a suicide attempt.
  4. How to assess and support Veterans experiencing suicidal feelings.
  5. Learn about local resources and how the VA can support Veterans and other programs.

CE Faculty
Gayle Keller, LCSW has lived in Oregon for 30 years. She received her MSW in 2006 and became
fully licensed in 2009. She is trained in DBT, CBT, Motivational Interviewing and ACT. Her
professional experience includes working with severally mentally ill adults, 5 years’ experience in
consultation with medical clinics, supervision of interns and CSWA’s, and 8.5 years working with
veterans at the VA. She is currently serving as a Suicide Prevention Coordinator at the VA Portland
Health Care System, where she is a Yellow Belt trainer and is working at completing certifications to
become an ASSIST instructor.
