Who Should Attend: This training is open to all RVP Volunteer Providers, social workers, mental health counselors, and community providers.
What You Will Learn:
This presentation will discuss the definition of addiction and substance use and how that definition has changed over time. The current diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders will be introduced and the differences between “at risk,” “hazardous” and “disorders” will be discussed. In addition, the various models of addiction will be discussed in some detail.
After introducing the definition, diagnosis and models of addiction, the presentation will focus on screening individuals for addiction including the use of interviewing, collateral information, laboratory screening and self-report screening tools. The presentation will also briefly introduce the current approaches to addiction treatment.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the screening process for alcohol and other substance use disorders in the veteran population.
- Describe key questions to ask the veteran in ascertaining the presence of a substance use disorder.
- List the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders.
- Discuss the most prominent co-morbidities that may occur in this population.

Dr. Marian Fireman
Dr. Fireman is a Psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience in General and Addiction Psychiatry. She currently is Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University and works in the Psychiatric Emergency Service at Unity Center for Behavioral Health in Portland, Oregon. She previously practiced at the Portland VA Medical Center as a consult-liaison, outpatient and addiction psychiatrist for over 20 years. She is particularly interested in education in the field of addictions for learners at all levels.
