What You Will Learn:
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Military Sexual Trauma (MST) are two experiences that significantly impact our Veteran population, both in the short- and long-term. There are important clinical considerations to take into account for those who have/are experiencing IPV and/or MST.
The VA Portland Health Care System’s IPV & MST Coordinators will provide an overview of these two topics, how they intersect, prevalence, and risk factors for IPV. They will discuss the impact of trauma related to IPV & MST experiences, briefly review trauma informed practice in clinical work, and provide treatment recommendations and resources for clinicians and survivors of IPV & MST.

CE Faculty
The VA Portland Health Care System’s IPV & MST Coordinators
Guy Tyler, LCSW is a clinical social worker on the VAPORHCS PTSD Clinical Team as well as one of the VA Portland Health Care System’s MST coordinators. He has trained in trauma processing therapies such as CPT and PE, and has a strong background in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and treating complex trauma. In addition to his work at the Veteran’s Administration, Mr. Tyler has also served as adjunct faculty at Portland State University and maintains a private practice here in Portland.
Aysha Crain, LCSW has been a social worker with the VA Portland Health Care System for the last 10 years. She has been a psychotherapist on the Dialectical Behavior Therapy team and is currently a provider on the PTSD Clinical team, as well as a one of the Military Sexual Trauma Coordinators. Ms. Crain earned her MSW from Portland State University in 2012 and has been an adjunct professor in the School of Social Work at PSU since 2016. Her clinical interests include treatment of complex trauma, spiritual/religious trauma, interpersonal trauma, and supervision of clinical social workers towards licensure.
Andrew Goodwin, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been practicing in the field for 16 years. He is currently one of the Coordinators for the Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program at the VA Portland Health Care System. Andrew’s current work focuses on providing clinical interventions to Veterans using and experiencing Intimate Partner Violence. Prior to this position, he worked in the VA Portland Health Care System’s Opiate Treatment Program providing individual and group therapy and case management to Veterans living with Opioid Use Disorder and co-morbid substance and mental health disorders. In addition to working at the VA, Andrew has worked in various community and government organizations including Oregon State Hospital, Home Forward, Metropolitan Boston Housing Partnership (Boston, MA), Home Start (Boston, MA), and Bridge Over Troubled Waters (Boston, MA). His focus has been on clinical work with people involved in various systems of care. Andrew completed his MSW degree from Salem State University in Salem, MA, and he is licensed in the State of Oregon. He holds certification in Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD.
Michelle Davis, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been practicing in the field for 18 years. She is currently one of the Coordinators for the Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program at the Portland VA Medical Center. Michelle’s current work focuses on clinical interventions to Veterans using and experiencing Intimate Partner Violence. Prior to this position, she worked in the VA homeless programs as an Outreach Coordinator and Clinician. In addition to working at the VA, Michelle has worked in various community and government organizations including Adult Protective Services (San Mateo County, CA) and Jail Psychiatric Services (San Francisco, CA). Her focus has been on clinical work with people involved in various systems of care. Michelle completed her MSW degree from San Francisco State University, and she is licensed in the state of California. She holds certifications as a Certified Homeless Social Worker (VHA), Certified PMDB Instructor (VHA, Levels 2-4), Certified Title V-E (San Francisco State) and Certified Outreach Worker (HRC-Oakland). She is also a Certified Yoga Instructor (People’s Yoga).
