With Ian Michael, ODVA LGBTQ+ Veterans Coordinator

Location: Online

Continuing Education: 1.5 CE Credit

Cost: Free to RVP Volunteers, Vet Center and VA Staff
$29 for Other Community Providers

Who Should Attend: This training is open to all RVP Volunteer Providers, social workers, mental health counselors, and community providers.

What You Will Learn:

From the early days of the United States military until the mid-20th century, LGBTQ+ service members have been negatively impacted by discriminatory policies. These policies make it nearly impossible to determine how many queer people made the ultimate sacrifice for our safety.

ODVA recognizes the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ veteran community and continues to work diligently to address, support, and protect those needs. This training will provide a 1.5-hour cultural presentation to equip those who serve Oregon’s veterans with the knowledge and resources to support Oregon’s LGBTQ+ veterans and their families.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

  1. Understand the role of ODVA in Oregon and how they support veterans.
  2. Learn the history of discriminatory policies that negatively impacted our LGBTQ+ service members, such as ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’.
  3. Learn about the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and the struggles still faced by the LGBTQ+ veteran and prior service community.
  4. Learn about military sexual trauma, traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and other risk factors that impact the LGBTQ+ community.
  5. Learn about the different identities that make up the Oregon LGBTQ+ veteran and prior service community.
  6. Learn about resources to help support the LGBTQ+ veteran and prior service community.
