Gambling skates under the radar of therapists and general public to a drastic degree. Building awareness and tools around approaching this hidden addictive process is vital for clinicians to see and address it as a primary co-occurring behavior.

Who Should Attend:
This training is open to all RVP Volunteer Providers, social workers, mental health counselors, and community providers.
What You Will Learn:
Gambling as an addiction is dramatically under-recognized in both severity and scope. When contrasted with substance addictions, gambling addiction has equal or even more dire consequences for both those addicted and their families.
As a process addiction, it shares some similarities to substance addictions, but at its core is very different. One example is the state’s enthusiastic endorsement, which effects a client’s perceptions and treatment.
Problem gambling in Oregon is more prevalent and has farther reaching effects than is generally acknowledge. For a therapist, it is important to understand how often gambling addiction presents as a comorbidity with other mental health or addictive issues and can be vital to treating and understanding how and why our clients succeed or fail.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to:
- Introduce gambling as a separate and distinct addiction with its own specific differences and concepts that impact approach and treatment.
- Lay the groundwork for understanding scope and severity of gambling issues in Oregon.
- Offer specific intervention model that are tailored specifically for those less familiar with gambling.
- Discuss referral and resources for outpatient and residential gambling treatment in Oregon.
CE Faculty
Nate Peterson is a Certified Gambling Addictions Counselor, Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor, and is in long-term recovery from a gambling disorder. Nate works for Volunteers of America running their Problem Gambling Outpatient Program. He has dedicated that past 16-years advocating for persons who suffer from a gambling disorder and sits on the board of the non-profit advocacy group Voices of Problem Gambling Recovery that speaks for those who suffer from or affected by gambling. Nate brings a strong background of lived life experience that he’s applied to his clinical practice enabling him to base his interventions from practical and clinical insights.
