What You Will Learn:

This 90-minute continuing education presentation provides an overview of trauma with a focus on its relevance to military and veteran populations. Participants will examine major types of trauma alongside the neurological and biopsychosocial impacts that shape how trauma may present across clinical and somatic care settings. The session will also explore sociocultural and systemic influences, including military culture and healthcare structures, that affect both trauma experiences and care delivery.

Building on this foundation, the presentation introduces core principles of trauma-informed care (TIC) and their application at both individual and organizational levels. Emphasis will be placed on practical integration across disciplines, supporting providers in recognizing trauma beyond diagnostic labels and responding effectively in complex or challenging interactions. This session is designed for mental health and somatic care providers working with veterans in clinical, community, and integrated care settings.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe major types of trauma and identify those most relevant to military populations.
  2. Explain the neurological and biopsychosocial impacts of trauma and how these may present in veteran populations.
  3. Describe core principles of trauma-informed care (TIC) and analyze how sociocultural and systemic factors influence their implementation at individual and organizational levels.
  4. Apply trauma-informed care principles to clinical and interdisciplinary scenarios involving veterans, including challenging interactions.
