What You Will Learn:
Suicide is a growing public health concern that affects all Americans. It continues to be the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. The suicide rates for Veterans continue to grow at a faster pace than for non-Veteran adults. While the Veterans Healthcare Administration has led efforts to identify individuals at risk for suicide and to implement programs and policies to mitigate that risk, suicide risk identification remains an imperfect science.

This presentation will focus on key elements that should be included when evaluating suicide risk. There will be a review of the VA’s nationally standardized process for suicide risk screening and assessment, which includes evidence-based tools and practices. Strategies to manage assessed level of risk will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to identify unique suicide risk factors for Veterans.
  2. Participants will gain an understanding of how to stratify acute and chronic risk.
  3. Participants will be able to identify 3 strategies for mitigating suicide risk.
