The Veteran Trauma and Transparency Program (VT&T) aims to improve the care for Veterans by enhancing service providers' understanding of military culture and experiences.

Location: Online

Continuing Education: 4.5 (Applied through NASW Oregon)

Cost: Free to RVP Volunteers and partnering clinics who are listed in our directory and who have an active MOU with RVP. We also welcome our OR/WA Vet Center and VA staff to join for free. All other community providers, please pay $29 (or apply to become a RVP volunteer provider).

Who Should Attend:
This training is open to all RVP Volunteer Providers, social workers, mental health counselors, and community providers.

What You Will Learn:

This program presents an excellent opportunity to expand your knowledge of veteran trauma and contribute to better care and support for our honorable veterans. Indiana University partners with the IU Center for Rural Engagement to present. This course consists of three 90 minute workshops, with each session building upon the knowledge gained in the previous ones.

Please note that the training involves exposure to sensitive personal stories. Speakers will present topics relevant to our veterans, including: Human Rights Foundational Perspective, Veteran Demographics, Military Culture, Law of War Moral Injury, Survivor’s Guilt, Military Sexual Trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Trauma-Informed Care, Veteran Treatment Court, and more.

Attendees will receive CEU from NASW and a certificate of completion from IU IPE.

Learning Objectives:

Module 1 –The Military Lens:

  • Understand the unique culture of the Veteran population, rural Veterans, Veteran demographics and considerations surrounding Law of War.

Module 2 – In Times of Service: Invisible Injuries and Wounds of Combat:

  • Explore invisible injuries and wounds of combat. Identify signs and symptoms of Veteran grief and loss, moral injury, survivor’s guilt, military sexual trauma, post traumatic stress disorder, and traumatic brain injury.

Module 3 – Finding Self Post-Service: Challenges and Coping as a Civilian:

  • Identify challenges of transition and gain practical insights on reintegration, unemployment, substance use disorder, suicide, homelessness, trauma informed care.

CE Faculty
Alex Buchanan is the Project Manager at the Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center. At the IU IPE Center, Alex oversees various curricular and co-curricular projects that pertain to interprofessional education and collaboration. He also manages the Indiana Communities Advancing Recovery Efforts (IN CAREs) program at the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health through the IUPUI ECHO Center.

Todd Burkhardt, PhD, is the Director of Campus Partnerships for Indiana University’s Center for Rural Engagement (CRE), facilitating work with faculty, staff, and students that connects resources through collaboration with community partners to improve wellbeing in rural Indiana. Todd is a human rights philosopher and teaches international humanitarian law for the Department of Criminal Justice, and is the co-creator of CAV (Creative Arts for Vets) that spans the country assisting veterans with methodologies for improving emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Todd served over 27 years in the active-duty Army as an enlisted tank crewman and infantry officer.

John M. Keesler, PhD, LMSW, is an associate professor at Indiana University School of Social Work on the Bloomington campus where he teaches in the graduate program. Dr. Keesler’s research focuses on adversity, trauma-informed care, and quality of life within the disability service industry and rural communities. He has presented and published his scholarship at local, state, national, and international levels.
