Who Should Attend: This training is open to all RVP Volunteer Providers, social workers, mental health counselors, and community providers.
What You Will Learn:
The symptoms and behavioral challenges experienced by Veterans with PTSD also influence their social functioning and interpersonal relationships. Research has shown that there are important bidirectional impacts between the social environment and PTSD symptoms. This presentation will focus on family inclusive treatment and include perspectives from Veterans, family members and VA clinicians. This presentation also will include specific recommendations for optimizing family-inclusive care, as well as outlining a number of brief protocols that have been developed for Veterans and family members.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the rationale for incorporating family members or other support persons into a Veteran’s PTSD treatment.
- Discuss common goals that veterans and family members have for family-inclusive treatment.
- Identify one or more protocols to support brief family involvement in treatment.
CE Faculty
Johanna Thompson-Hollands, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. She completed her Doctoral training at Boston University under the mentorship of David Barlow. At BU Dr. Thompson-Hollands was heavily involved in the testing and refinement of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders. In addition to contributing to this line of work, she also wrote and was awarded an F31 to develop and test a brief intervention for the family members of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, with the goal of enhancing patients’ treatment outcomes. Following her graduate work, she transitioned to working in the VA system, first as a predoctoral intern and later as a research fellow and finally a Staff Research Psychologist in the National Center for PTSD at VA Boston Healthcare System. Her work continues to focus on treatment development and outcome, with a particular emphasis on the role of family and other social supports in enhancing outcomes and retention in PTSD treatment.
