Who Should Attend: This training is open to all RVP Volunteer Providers, social workers, mental health counselors, and community providers.

What You Will Learn:

Cannabis is increasingly accessible and used by Veterans, both for medical and recreational purposes. Patients often get information about cannabis from dispensaries and elsewhere outside the health care system, rather than from their health care providers. As the public’s interest and acceptance of cannabis grows, it is important for health care providers to engage in evidence-based discussions about cannabis. We will provide an overview of the physical and mental health effects of cannabis; review what is known about the use of cannabis to treat conditions and symptoms; describe harm reduction advice for patients; and provide resources for clinicians and researchers.

The Systematically Testing the Evidence on Marijuana (STEM) project is a web-based, independent, methodologically rigorous, and updated cannabis evidence resource for the health care sector that synthesizes what is known from research and what is left to learn about the health effects of cannabis. We stand at the forefront as the only known non-nindustry funded resource directed toward health care providers on this topic. STEM is a collaboration between the Veterans Rural Health Resource Center/Office of Rural Health and the Center for Evidence-based Policy at Oregon Health & Science University.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

  1. Understand basic terminology about cannabis, including formulations, routes of administration, dosing, and key cannabinoids.
  2. Describe to patients what is known about the potential beneficial effects of cannabis.
  3. Identify potential long-term harms of cannabis use.
  4. Understand health effects of cannabis in specific subpopulations such as pregnant women and young adults.
