What You Will Learn:
This introductory workshop will help prepare behavioral health providers to work with children of military-connected families. We will begin by summarizing normative military family experiences and differentiating them from non-normative stressors, including parental trauma. The impact of both normative and non-normative experiences on children and family functioning will then be examined. We will also highlight specific skill-building strategies to employ with families and caregivers, focused on helping children to build resiliency and successfully navigate these military experiences. This program content focuses on the application of intervention methods for working with military children and families that have consistent and credible empirical support in the scientific literature.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to:
- Distinguish between normative and non-normative stressors commonly experienced by military children and families.
- Evaluate the impact of military stressors and parental trauma on children.
- Use resources and skill-building activities with families and caregivers impacted by military experiences.
